Chobani Hit With False ‘Fair Trade’ Ad Class Action

Law360 (July 13, 2021, 7:49 PM EDT) — Yogurt maker Chobani misleads consumers with claims of being the first “Fair Trade Certified Dairy” firm when it actually exploits immigrant workers in “dangerous” and “marginalized” conditions for “low pay,” according to a proposed class action filed in New York federal court.

The suit, filed Monday by a group of yogurt buyers who allege the company’s misrepresentations lead them to overpay for the product, cited Chobani’s claims in labeling, advertising and recent press releases to be the first dairy company certified by Fair Trade USA, a nonprofit that grants and sets standards for the fair trade label.
